Do you have 90 days?

When I am speaking with people about health I am often asked "when will I see results?". The truth is "not immediately" in most cases. There are a very few instances where the person will notice immediate results when using a healing technique, taking a supplement, or making dietary/lifestyle changes but most often it takes some time. Think about it like this: your health did not deteriorate in just a few minutes or hours -- it took days, months and even years. Your health will not drastically improve overnight. It is generally accepted to allow 90 days to really notice improvements in your health when using any program. Keep in mind that I said "notice improvements" and not be completely at 100% optimal health. The years of damage done to your body, mind, emotions and spirit can take equally as long to completely heal. In some people, healing occurs more quickly than in others. Healing is an entirely individual process and no two people will heal the same. It is also worth noting that no one healing technique, supplement, or modification will work the same for every person. Taking all of this into account, I still suggest that you set aside 90 days to work on your health. Remain committed throughout the 90 days and keep a health journal to track your progress. Your first journal entry should be how you feel right now and why you are seeking to change your health. Each entry after that should state what you are doing to change your health and any differences that you notice. Go back frequently to see how much progress you have made. At the end of 90 days go back and read over your initial entry and compare it to how you are feeling right now. You will notice a difference. There are many things that you can spend the next 90 days doing, so why not spend them improving your health?

What do we need to be healthy?
  • Hydration: drink plenty of water daily -- a good rule of thumb for determining how much water to drink is to divide your weight in half and that is the amount of water you need in ounces daily.

  • Diet: eating fresh, organic foods is best. Look for foods that are not genetically modified, irradiated, chemically treated, hormonally treated, loaded with antibiotics, or have pesticides/harsh fertilizers used on them. Check your local farmer's market and butcher and speak with the vendors about how their foods are grown and harvested.

  • Toxin Free Environment: cut back on pollution by recycling, use air/water filtration systems in your home, use natural cleansers for your home/laundry etc to cut back on home chemical use

  • Toxin Free Mind and Body: detoxing your body is recommended at least twice per year, detox your mind through various relaxation techniques, avoid ingesting toxins, read food/drink labels closely and choose wisely, maintaining proper body elimination is a key to staying healthy, exercise

  • Supplementation: using herbs and essential oils can greatly improve your health and well-being, essential oils are also wonderful to use in home cleaning products

  • Relaxation: take time to enjoy your life, find the things that make you unhappy and work to eliminate them, be thankful for what you have in your life

  • Stress Reduction: stress comes from everywhere it seems, pay attention to the things that stress you and try to avoid them, for the unavoidables find ways to cope and reduce the stress by increasing your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual awareness. This can be accomplished by using a variety of techniques such as: Reiki, EFT, belly dance, reflexology, crystals, meditation, positive affirmations, meditation, yoga, prayer, exercise, sleep, fun activities, hypnosis, visualization, guided imagery, art, music, aromatherapy, quantum touch, light therapy, etc.

  • Good Relationships: keeping good relations with family and friends helps reduce stress and provides you with a network of loving individuals to support you in times of need

  • Good Sleep: a decent night of sleep can make all the difference in the world to how you feel each day. Invest in a good mattress set and allow yourself plenty of time for sleep each night

  • Laughter/Smiling: if you don't have a good sense of humor do work on that! It is shown that laughter can help the body heal very quickly. There are laughter clubs and therapy groups all over the world and laughter therapy is growing in popularity. If you can laugh (especially at yourself) then nothing can keep you down for long. Laughing generally gives you an instant lift into a better mood. Keep a file on hand of funny emails to read as needed, keep a funny picture accessible, read jokes. Smiling is a great way to lift your mood and give anyone a boost in their day.

  • Exercise: when you work your body it becomes stronger and healthier and is a great way to get your mind off of stressful thoughts and calm down. There are hundreds of types of exercise for all levels of experience and for those who are disabled as well. Exercises can include yoga, running, walking, belly dance, dance, martial arts, weight training, bicycling, rowing, kayaking, canoeing, tennis, baseball, football, volleyball, etc. Trying different types of exercise will help you find things that will keep you interested and give you a variety of exercises to do because we all know that if exercise gets boring or starts feeling like a chore we won't do it.
